History

GISDA was founded in 1985 by a group of volunteers in the Caernarfon area who were concerned about the growing problem of youth homelessness in the town during the early 80’s and the prejudices they faced when seeking help and support.

In 1989, in partnership with Cymdeithas Tai Eryri, we opened our first hostel, called Hafan, in Caernarfon, for 8 young people. Since then we have opened another hostel, called Llys Meddyg, and a hostel, called Fron Fawr, both in Blaenau Ffestiniog. We also have two fully-furnished houses in Dolgellau, which are owned by Tai Clwyd. We also work in partnership with Gwynedd Council and the Housing Associations and, as a result, we have projects that can support people in other properties. We also continue to support people who are still living at home.

GISDA originally stood for’Grŵp Ieuenctid Sengl Digartref Arfon’ which meant Young, Single, Homeless Group of Arfon. Today we support young homeless people and their families throughout Gwynedd to include: single young people, single parents, expectant mothers, couples and families.
Over the years our services have expanded and developed and are still as much in demand today as they have always been.
